FDA rejects risk-management plans from painkiller makers
The FDA told drugmakers that their proposals to prevent the abuse of painkillers such as morphine are not enough to curb the practice. Pfizer plans its versions of blockbuster biotech drugs
Pfizer might launch its own versions of 10 to 15 biotech drugs, starting with Amgen's Epogen for anemia or Sanofi-Aventis' anti-clotting treatment Lovenox, as the company makes its way into the biogenerics market, said David Simmons, head of Pfizer's Established Products Business Unit. The plan is in line with Pfizer's expansion of its generics business and the government's work toward establishing a system for approving biogenerics. Bloomberg (12/9)

HHS announces plan to fund HIT workforce development
David Blumenthal, HHS' national coordinator for health information technology, on Tuesday announced a plan to commit $80 million in grants to help develop and strengthen the health information workforce. The grants include $70 million for community college training and $10 million to develop educational materials to support these programs. Read the HHS release.

Web 3.0 or semantic technology is gradually making its way to the mainstream market, and health care industry leaders have already started adopting it because of its potential to address data issues, writes Michael Cataldo, CEO of Boston-based Cambridge Semantics. Semantic technology creates a platform to which all clinical and research data from various IT systems and databases can be integrated, giving health care providers easier access to critical information.
